Notes from the Head

Review of the week: 27th April 2018

It certainly was a very busy week for the children.  We were delighted to welcome Nercwys into school on Tuesday for a whole day and really good to see how the children began to interact, play and work together. This was a special event for both schools which culminated in the shared performance of Gorilla Dawn on Wednesday evening at the Alun School.  Thank to all who were able to attend and also to the kind messages from those who could not be with us.  We were delighted to receive a message from Gill Lewis the author of Gorillla Dawn who wrote a special message to the children:

Hello everybody! I hope you have been enjoying developing a play about Gorilla Dawn. I expect you have been looking into gorillas and their behaviours and where they live. They are truly remarkable creatures aren’t they? I’m so chuffed to hear about your drama production because you will be doing something remarkable…you will be raising awareness about threats facing gorillas and the natural world.

Your drama production will inform teachers, parents, and parents’ friends etc. I hope you’ve found it interesting thinking about what life must be like for Imara and Bobo and Kitwana. I hope the play goes brilliantly and you can celebrate with cake at the end! Very best of wishes, Gill Lewis x

The performance celebrated a special collaboration of the two church schools and we hope that this will be the beginning of many more shared events.

This week has been busy on Monday we did R.E. and year 5 looked at a 4 paintings and had to look for similarities and differences. The paintings were of four people.  The year 5 had to try and work out who the people were by looking at a passage in the bible. The Year 6 looked at the parts of the Old Testament which are also the Jewish Torah to look for evidence for why Jewish people have kosher. In Science we looked at the formation of the universe and put the events into a timeline. Then we worked out the diameter of the planets and worked out to scale the distance of each planet from the sun. We made little models to scale.

On Tuesday we had a visit from Nercwys so we could get together and practise our play with Jane Meakin.  We had a great time with Nercwys and we enjoyed their company and their performance. On Wednesday we looked at science and finished off our solar systems and answered questions on the big bang. Then we went to the Alun school on the bus.  In the night we did our Gorilla Dawn performance and all the children did so well.

On Thursday we evaluated our Gorilla Dawn performance and talked about how good we were at managing ourselves and how good our performance was. We thought about our strengths and how we work in a team.

On Friday we did circle time and we played the light house and rocks game and also we guessed who the people were when we described them.  We had football with Miss Roberts and Steve and also we finished off our R.E.

What a busy week! We really enjoyed welcoming Nercwys Primary pupils to our school. We made so many new friends! We all joined together for the day, playing, chatting, acting, eating, listening to stories and exploring. It was very special and Nercwys have invited us to their school so we are looking forward to our visit!

We tried very hard at the Alun High School, performing Gorilla Dawn to all our parents. We were very nervous but really enjoyed the whole experience!

In Guided Reading this week we have been using non-fiction texts to research information based on the planets. We have read a story about the Little Red Alien and have had to find punctuation and adjectives.

Nursery this week have loved playing outside with the older pupils, exploring the water and block play. Pupils have been building rockets and dance mats. In the water, pupils had to problem solve and get their water supply to different planets.
Bendigedig pawb!

No homework this week except reading and spellings for Yr 1 and 2.
Pupils have had a very busy and tiring week. Yr 2 Welsh National Tests begin next week and we will ensure pupils are relaxed and happy with the whole process. If you have any queries please come into see us.

Review of the week: 21st April 2018

Great to see the sunshine at last, well done to everyone for thinking ‘sunsafe’ with hats, sunscreen and water.  I do hope the weather lasts it certainly makes a difference to us all.

This week we have been very busy with our rehearsals for ‘Gorilla Dawn’.  This is an exciting project for the two schools Nannerch and Nercwys, as we bring our two communities together to share the talents of our children.  The children have been very busy rehearsing all week, it is a challenging story however the children are all doing well…just another weekend to focus on learning of lines and then the show.

We have planned to take all the children down to the Alun School for a rehearsal on Wednesday 25th April.  We will remain at the Alun School until the show which begins at 6pm.  (Doors open at 5.40pm).  Seats are limited so we suggest two per family, however if you would like more please do contact us.

I do hope you can join us for this special celebration of our village schools.  The School Council and their subcommittees have been really busy this week.  The Toilet Council have ‘twinned’ with two toilets and are now awaiting more details about the villages they are supporting.  Good Food Gang are busy preparing to paint the design on the walls in the Kitchen serving area.  Playground committee are working with Mr Wright to help clear the moss from the court and are working to make play times more inclusive.

Martha has created a super video of the work by all the committees, well done to everyone involved.

Dates for your diary:

Please note the Welsh National Tests will be taking place for Years 2 through to 6 during the first two weeks of May.

This week we have enjoyed finding out about Probability in maths, probability is how likely something is to happen, it is also called ‘chance’.  We played games with spinners, dice and coins.  We had to put the results into charts and used fractions and percentages to describe the probability.

In Science we started to think about the universe and found information about the Big Bang. We are using the ipads and Padlet to organise our questions and facts found.

In Guided Reading we researched and used our reading skills to answer questions based on reports of Astronauts who are going into space for a year. We found out what it might be like to live in space.

We are starting to find out about the Jewish religion and we used our problem solving skills to answer a mystery question.  Then we thought about what belief is and why we all need to feel sure about some things. We thought of three promises we could make to help make the planet Earth a better place to live, for ourselves, other people and the whole world.

We have practised Gorilla Dawn a lot this week. We all need to learn our lines this weekend. On Tuesday Nercwys School will join us for the day to rehearse.

Miss Robert’s Class: Owain

Hi, it’s Tilly and Oscar writing the blog.

We have had a good week and we have enjoyed the Sun! Especially because our topic is Space.

In Maths we have been learning about multiplying by 10. When we understood the pattern we were able to x 100 and even x 1000.

On Tuesday Miss Roberts was on a course and we had a supply teacher called Mr Blakesley. We wrote a report on a planet using PicCollage on the iPads. Tilly did her report on Earth and Oscar did his on Neptune.

We also have been rehearsing for our Gorilla Dawn performance. We are looking forward to performing in the Alun.

In language we have started a new genre. We are looking at instructions. We worked with our talking partner and made a list of different types of instructions, there was recipes, coding, sat navs, talking and many more.

We watched a video of talking instructions and looked at written instructions. We decide on the main features of instructions and we are going to use them as our steps to success.

In Science we are looking at Light. We learnt about primary and secondary sources of light and we went on a hunt around school for different types of light.

Our homework is to keep practicing our Gorilla Dawn parts and if you have any, rehearse your lines.

Thanks for reading!

We have blasted off into Space again this week and pupils have been role playing in their very own spaceship!

In Welsh pupils have used language to describe different coloured space clothes.

Our new topic in R.E. Is Judaism and Miss Douggie has introduced this with us this week.

Maths has been challenging, whilst Reception have been learning vocabulary and skills linked to subtraction, Yr 1 and 2 have been using column addition with hundreds tens and units.

In P.E we continued on our space journey through the stars. Nursery really enjoyed themselves!

We have enjoyed the sunshine and using water to solve space problems of zero gravity. This will continue next week!

Have a lovely weekend.

Review of the week: 14th April 2018

The first week of our summer term has arrived, and as always it is good to be back with the children.  Having the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of a child is always a privilege and this first week back has been no exception.  It has been a special pleasure to listen and share with them what has been happening in their lives during Easter.

Many of our pupils told me this week that Ysgol Nannerch is a small school and a big family, and I think many of us would echo that sentiment.  The closeness of the school community is something very unique and every child brings their own gifts and talents, creating a very rich learning environment.

We have been busy all week preparing and rehearsing our collaborative project ‘Gorilla Dawn’.  The whole school are taking part in this creative arts project, which will culminate in a joint schools performance (Nannerch and Nercwys) which will take place at the Alun School in Mold on Wednesday 25th April, please save this date in your diary, details are being finalised and will be sent home next week.

Year 5 and 6 have been working to further develop their pupil voice this week and have been describing themselves as the ‘Voice of  Wales’.  Together we have discovered the link between the United Nations Rights of the Child and the ‘ Wellbeing of Future Generations of Wales Act 2015’. I was impressed with the children’s understanding ‘that decisions being made today are having an impact on our future’.  I am very proud of our Year 5 & 6 who are far more aware than I ever was at their age of the world around them and the issues they will face in the future.  However they have a good sense of their own strengths and how they work to support one other.  I am very proud that some of our pupils have applied to sit on the advisory panel of the Children’s Commissioner of Wales.  Their applications are all different and give evidence of the exceptional young people they are becoming.

Well done to Jasmin and the Toilet committee who ran a successful fund raising event on Friday, they raised over £90 for the Toilet Twinning charity.  Thank you to all children and parents for supporting this.

Thank you also to everyone who worked to support the PTA on the special homework task. The children volunteering to do chores at home and then donating their pocket money is a very special thing to do.  This Sunday is April 15th - Microvolunteering Day, I’m so pleased that the children’s actions align with this raising of awareness.  Each one of us can help create a more positive world.

On Monday we did guided reading and we read about the first lady to go into space her name was Valentine Tereshkova, we had to answer true or false questions.   In Maths we did negative numbers.  Then we did a true or false sheet about space and in the afternoon in topic we said 'what we know about space'.

On Tuesday we practised our play,  Gorilla Dawn.  For this we all have a part in the play there is Boss Man, Imara ,Saka, Frog, guards and more.   Later on we made videos of our committees such as how the Toilet Committee are raising money for toilet twinning and the Good Food Gang are making sure people on their birthday get a special 'birthday setting' at lunch time.  Our committees are making a video to share what they’re doing to help the school and the world itself.

On Wednesday after working on our first lady in space true or false quiz we went for an early dinner and then went to a skate park.  We had a choice of a BMX bike, skateboard or a scooter.  It was challenging trying something new however it was good fun.

On Thursday we listened to our class book Sky Hark then we went to work on Gorilla Dawn. Later we wrote a personal profile on our life, we had to think about the type of skills we have, our interests and what is important to us.

On Friday we came in our pj’s and brought a toy in aid of the Toilet Twinning.  We had  football with Steve and Miss Roberts then we  continued with our profile which some of us are using as an application for a role with the Children's Commissioner.  Then we had our cake sale and at the end of the day we went home!

It’s been a busy week getting back into a routine and a new topic after the Easter Holiday! Our new topic is ‘Space’ and the pupils have been very excited.

They have made a space wish list for the classroom areas so we have been busy creating and making a giant space rocket and a moon base! Thank you pupils, Mrs Biddle and Mrs Whitehead for all their designing this week!

Our new story is called The Lost Stars and it depicts our busy world and the fact we don’t always notice the beauty that surrounds us. The stars become fed up with everyone looking down at their phones and playing their computers so they pack their bags and head for the beach. The people in this story always appreciate the world now their stars have returned safely and this is a lovely way of beginning our topic.

Our new genre in Language is autobiographical and we are writing our weekly news. Some pupils are targeted with writing independently and this has been very successful this week. Some pupils have been editing their writing and making sure they can read it back and it contains full sentences. We have all used a planner with the 5 W’s, Who? What? Where? When? Why? This has supported our writing.

In Maths we are learning and building on subtraction. This is being done through practical ways and a variety of strategies for the older pupils.

Nursery have had a fun week settling back into a routine and they have begun learning a new space song. Mrs Whitehead has begun making a space station with the pupils and George was dressed up as Buzz Lightyear!

In PE we were all taken on a space journey, we dressed as astronauts and flew to the stars. It was so much fun but we were exhausted once we landed back on earth!

Have a lovely weekend earthlings!
