Notes from the Head

22nd March 2015

This solar eclipse on Friday was a wonderful end to the week, it was great to be joined by some of our parents on the playground to witness the changes in the atmosphere as the moon passed between the sun and the earth.

The inventive methods used to view this happening included using the humble kitchen colander to cast shadows on to white paper.

During the eclipse we all observed the lovely sunny morning becoming colder and duller as the moon partially blocked out some of the sunlight.  Mrs John accompanied by some of our very own Nannerch astronauts demonstrated exactly what happens during a solar eclipse.

Some of the children were inspired to record the event, through sketches of the shadows cast and one of our children in Foundation Class independently used one of the class ipad's to record what had happened, with a wonderful explanation of what happens during an eclipse and a drawing of the moon blocking the sun.

The children in Foundation Phase have this week been learning to use the app 'Explain Everything' to import pictures, speak into the ipad and make mini film documentaries about their recent Church visit.

Mrs John had left the ipads out for the children to explore and become accustomed to the app and speaking into the ipad. Mrs John was very impressed when she found the piece of work recording the mornings solar eclipse.

Earlier in the week the Year 4 & 5 travelled to Glan-llyn, an Urdd outdoor education centre situated on the shores of the stunning Lake Tegid in Bala.

The children and myself joined pupils and teachers from Cilcain, Mold, Hawarden and Ewloe. We spent 3 days at the centre taking part in the range of activities which included raft building, archery and the high ropes course.  During the evening we played games and were delighted with a demonstration of bids of prey.

Nannerch and Cilcain joined forces and devised actions to accompany a song they sang at the 'Noson Lawen' which took place on the last evening.

On our final day we travelled on the steam train into Bala. The children were a delight to be with and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

“Be true to yourself and believe in yourself” this was the inspirational message Lee Whiteley, shared with us on Friday during our sponsored sports event.  The event led by Lee was both inspirational and great fun; we all did our very best and demonstrated good levels of fitness, including the staff!

Lee spoke to us about his own very special and motivational story, born with cerebral palsy, Lee was teased and bullied at school. Despite having 3 strokes and being told he would never walk, Lee was determined and despite the obstacles he faced  has won over 500 medals and represented Britain in the Paralympics.

Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 who travelled to the N.E.C. in

Birmingham last Wednesday to take part in the F1 Challenge.  The children thoroughly enjoyed their day and were keen to share with us all they saw and did on the day, which included rubbing shoulders with the Prime Minister, David Cameron!  Well done to all the children for the high standards they have achieved during this STEM project.

The Year 4,5 & 6 will be travelling to Llandudno on 25th March to the North Wales ‘Big Bang’ F1 event.

At Easter Mrs S. Williams will be retiring as teacher here in Ysgol

Nannerch.  We hope Mrs. Williams enjoys the rest of this term in school, sharing with the children their pride in competing so successfully in the F1 competitions this year.  We are planning some special moments to share with Mrs Williams over the coming weeks in recognition of the huge contribution she has made to the school and community of Nannerch.

Our next Croeso Pawb with the theme of Easter, will take place on Tuesday 17th March.  Please join us at 2.30pm in St Michael & All Angels Church and afterwards at 3pm for tea and cakes. We request donations of cakes for this event please.

F1 Challenge

Our team Sonic appears from 36th minute. They are interviewed and then race their car.

The car was the 11th fastest out of 18 nationally and 3rd fastest in all Wales! We even beat the Welsh secondary schools!

We had a very early start (6.00) and returned at 7.30ish. A really brilliant day for all of us and the children were fantastic.

8th March 2015

On Thursday the children enjoyed the opportunity to dress up, celebrating World Book Day and St David’s Day.  The Foundation Phase children brought into school their favourite books to share; it was great to see Jonny Duddle on T.V. sharing his love of books on the BBC’s programme, Newsround.

The theme of story telling and reading continued throughout the week with the children learning how to use their prior knowledge to help them engage with a text during ‘Guided Reading’ sessions.  Reception and Year 1 are enjoying sharing the story of Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl and working on the text in detail during guided reading.  Mrs John tells me the whole class are eager and waiting in anticipation for the next chapter!

Thank you to all who attended Tuesday’s Vision evening.  The event gave us an opportunity to share how our ‘Estyn Recommendations’ will  translate into classroom practice. We were given excellent feedback during the evening from parents who are keen to support the development of a collaborative learning environment which will focus on encouraging all our children to aim high. The strong message which came through from the evening was that parents would like to understand more about pupil performance targets and are keen to support a whole school approach to homework and to understand how they  can support their children in their learning.

This coming Friday we are taking part in Sports for Schools with Lee Whiteley, who will join us in school for a sponsored fitness event.  The children have been practising the four exercises in readiness for our challenge. As Friday is also 'Red Nose Day', we will be donating a percentage of the money raised from the event to Comic Relief.

On Thursday 5th March the children are invited to dress up and come to school wearing their Welsh themed clothes or as a favourite book character in celebration of both World Book Day and St David’s Day.  We will be holding our annual Welsh Week later in the school year in support of the Halkyn Mountain fundraising for the 2016 Urdd Eisteddfod.

A very big thank you to Jonny Duddle, who kindly donated a copy of his special World Book Day book, ‘A Pirate's Guide to Landlubbing' to each pupil in the school.  The children were very excited at receiving such a special gift, thank you to Rosie and Daisy for helping Mrs John give out the books during our assembly time.

On Friday the 13th March we are taking part in a SPORTS for SCHOOLS event.  The children will be joined here in school by the inspiriing Lee Whiteley, British para-sport athlete who will be joining us in school for a sponsored fitness event.  We are all very excited at the thought of being trained and motivated by a world class athlete!  Sponsorship forms have been sent home with the children, the money raised will be used to purchase new P.E equipment for school with a donation made to Sports for Schools.

The Foundation Phase class have visited St Michael and All Angels Church in Nannerch to explore the buildings, noting particular shapes and colours and looking at features such as the stained glass windows, the church steeple and the grounds of the church.  Back in class the children have produced mind maps of what they think the Church is used with favourite suggestions being ‘a place where people meet, pray, chat, sing, drink tea and eat biscuits’.

The Year 2 & 3 are busy researching interesting facts about their chosen woodland animal, using ‘Talk for Writing’ to express their ideas.  Thank you for supporting your child at home with their learning about British woodland animals, the children are currently coming to school keen to share their interesting facts, our favourites include: Did you know that hedgehogs have 5000 spines which are replaced each year and that there are up to 500 fleas on each hedgehog!

The facts will be used by the children in their animal report writing with the most interesting fact used as a concluding sentence, ‘Did you know…?

A request from Nannerch Community Council

The passing place on School Lane is being used as a parking space by some people. This is making it difficult for cars to get through when a car is coming from the opposite direction.

Andy Lightfoot from Streetscene has been asked if a 'No Parking' sign can be put on it.

Please be considerate when visiting school and mindful of the health and safety of our school members and local residents.
