Notes from the Head
This week in April
6th April 2014
I popped into the Foundation Class this week whilst the children were engaged in activities exploring their mathematical skills of measuring length. The children were having great fun learning within the theme of 'Growth'. The activities ranged from painting taller and shorter flowers to measuring the length, breadth and circumferance of the containers used for planting. I was impressed with how some of the children were calculating the correct container for each plant according to the planting instructions.
There was a great deal of excitement in school on Wednesday as the children competed in the Ysgol Nannerch Eisteddfod. The standard of performance was excellent with the children taking up the challenge of performing their solo and group items. The standard of Welsh certainly impressed the Flintshire Advisor for Welsh, Mrs Marion Hughes who attended the event. Mrs Hughes herself is a past pupil of the school.
We were fortunate to have Mr Milner our peripatetic music teacher, and School Governor Mrs Barbara Davies adjudicating. The behaviour of all the children from Reception through to Year 6 was outstanding as they sat and supported their peers. The nursery children also joined in the fun during the afternoon and sang their group song.
The non-performance pieces are currently being judged and the overall winning House will be announced on Thursday 10th April along with the overall winner from Year Five and Year 6.
On Thursday the Years 4, 5 & 6 worked on their composing skills to create an 'osinato'. The activity was a follow up from last week's visit to the Philharmonic. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and focus of the children. Nannerch certainly has very musically and mathematically talented children!

Children from Year 5&6 impressed both swimming coaches and Flintshire teachers at Holywell Baths last Monday as they displayed their skills to a group who were attending a 'Water Safety Course' of which Nannerch and Lixwm children were asked to participate and demonstrate.
Please note there has been a slight change of plan to the arrangements for the Foundation Phase 'DANCEFEST'. The children in Years 1 & 2 will now perform in this event'. They will work with Miss Cooper and Mrs Selwyn to choreograph their piece with their first dance session taking place on Tuesday 29th during school. The children will perform on 26th June at Clwyd Theatr Cymru. The tickets will be on sale from the theatre box office from early June.
The Nursery and Reception children will now be taking part in an in-school arts event taking during the Summer Term, the children will begin working on this next term and Mrs John tells me it is very important that the outcome is to be a kept as a 'surprise' for them!
If you are planning a declutter over the holidays please note our keen Year 2's and the School Council have planned to hold a 'Bring & Buy' sale to raise money for the restocking of their popular 'wet playtime' Lego collection. The sale will take place on Friday 2nd May. Any unwanted toys, games or books can be brought to school on our return.
We return to school on Monday the 28th April. Have a lovely Easter, I look forward to seeing you all very soon and hearing all your holiday news. Thanks to everyone as on our return to school we hope to see our new 'Pirate Ship' docked into the playground. It is due to sail into Nannerch over Easter, ready for an eager crew to board and set sail into the Summer Term.
